Big Curl Volume

Flat curls? It’s usually not “more moisture”… it’s more hold.

If your curls keep falling flat, I need you to hear this: you probably don’t need another buttery, heavy product. A lot of the time, the issue is that the curl pattern is getting weighed down, so it can’t lift at the roots or keep its shape through the day.

My biggest shift was realizing “soft” isn’t the same as “lasting.” Soft curls can still be fluffy and full… but they need structure. That’s where hold products (like gel or mousse) and technique come in. And yes, I still want definition. I still want movement. I just want it with that “wow, your hair is huge” energy 😌

What I’m aiming for: volume + definition with minimal frizz

I’m not chasing a zero-frizz fantasy. I want healthy-looking curls with lift, and that usually means accepting a tiny bit of frizz as the price of big hair. One of the best mindset changes for volume is: don’t be afraid of a little frizz. Frizz isn’t always damage. Sometimes it’s just air + texture + life.

Also, volume doesn’t have to mean losing length. If you’ve ever scrunched and watched your curls shrink into a cute little bob (when you did not ask for that), you get it. I’m going to share how I keep volume without sacrificing too much length or definition.

Step 1: Start with the right “weight” of products

The fastest way to kill volume is layering heavy creams from root to tip. If your hair is fine, thin, or easily weighed down, try this approach:

Keep creams minimal (or skip them). Instead, lean into lighter stylers that give hold without coating the hair too much. Think: airy foam textures, lightweight gels, and anything that dries with a cast you can break later.

My personal rule: the closer to my scalp, the lighter the product. Roots need lift. Ends need slip and definition. When I put rich product near my scalp, my roots basically give up by lunchtime.

Step 2: Apply styling products on soaking wet hair

This part is so underrated. If I apply mousse or gel when my hair is only damp, it clumps weird, gets stringy, and I lose volume. When my hair is very wet, the curls form bigger, smoother clumps, and the product spreads evenly.

Here’s what “very wet” means for me: if I tilt my head and water is still dripping, perfect. If it’s just “humid,” not enough.

Technique that helps:

Rake lightly to distribute, then press/scrunch to encourage curl formation. I’m gentle at the roots because I don’t want to flatten them before they even dry.

Step 3: The combo that gives me big hair (without turning crunchy forever)

When I want volume and definition, I usually rely on a two-step styling idea:

1) Gel for definition + hold
2) Mousse for lift + fullness

Gel helps my curl pattern stay intact and reduces that “puffy but undefined” look. Mousse helps my hair feel bigger and keeps the roots from collapsing. Together, they give that balanced finish: defined curls that still look airy.

If you’ve tried gel and felt like it made your hair flat, it might be one of these:

You used too much (especially near the scalp).
You didn’t emulsify it (rub between hands first).
You didn’t dry it fully (volume shows up after the cast is broken).
Your gel is too heavy for your hair type (not all hold products are equal).

Step 4: Where you place product matters (root rules)

One of the biggest volume hacks is simply not putting heavy product on your scalp area. I focus most of my styling product from mid-length to ends, and whatever is left on my hands is what I lightly glaze over the top.

If I want extra root lift, I’ll apply a small amount of lightweight hold product to the roots only, but I’m careful. The goal is support, not “slicked down.”

Quick check: if your roots look shiny and stuck together while wet, that’s often a sign you used too much product up there.

Step 5: Volume-friendly curl formation (without shrinking too much)

I used to scrunch like my life depended on it. It gave me cute curls… and also took away so much length. Now I do a mix depending on the day:

If I want max volume: I scrunch more, and I accept more shrinkage.
If I want volume without sacrificing length: I scrunch less and focus on drying technique for lift.

One trick: instead of aggressive scrunching, I do a gentle “press up” motion at the ends to encourage curl without compacting everything toward my scalp.

Step 6: Diffusing routine for volume + definition

Diffusing is where the magic happens for me. Air-drying can look pretty, but if my hair is prone to falling flat, diffusing gives me that root lift that lasts.

My diffuser approach:

1) Don’t touch until there’s a cast
I let the outer layer start forming a cast before I start moving hair around too much. Touching too early can create frizz and disturb curl clumps.

2) Hover diffuse first
I hold the diffuser near my hair (not smashing it) to set the shape and reduce frizz. This helps lock in definition before I go in for volume.

3) Then diffuse roots with intention
I flip my head side to side (not just upside down the whole time) and focus on drying the root area. I’ll lift sections at the root with the diffuser fingers or my hand, then dry that lifted area.

4) Low and slow
High heat can create flash-dry frizz for me. Lower heat and airflow takes longer but gives a smoother finish and better shape.

Step 7: The claw clip root volume hack (yes, it works)

This is one of my favorite “why didn’t I do this sooner?” tricks. When my hair is drying (especially if I’m air-drying or partially diffusing), I use a claw clip to create lift at the roots.

How I do it:

1) Part hair how I want it to sit
If I clip first and part later, the roots dry in a weird direction.

2) Lift at the root, then clip
I grab a small section near the crown, lift it up, and clip so the hair is propped (not creased). I’m not clipping the ends—only the root area.

3) Use more than one clip if needed
One at the crown, one near the side part area. The goal is balanced lift, not a single bump.

4) Let it dry like that
Even 10–20 minutes can make a difference. If I diffuse after clipping, the lift gets even better.

Important: if you clip soaking wet hair with a ton of product at the root, it can dry sticky and flat. This hack works best when the roots are lightly styled.

Step 8: “Don’t be afraid of frizz” (but control it strategically)

I used to panic the second I saw frizz forming. Now I treat it like data. If I’m frizzy in a specific spot every time, it usually means:

That area dried too fast (diffuser too hot or too close).
I touched it too early (hands in hair while it’s setting).
Not enough hold (curls expand and lose definition).
Too much friction (towel roughness, aggressive scrunching).

What helps me keep frizz “cute” instead of chaotic:

Micro-plopping with a soft fabric for a few seconds (just to remove dripping water).
Hands off while drying.
Hold product focused on the canopy and ends where frizz shows most.

Step 9: The moment that changes everything: break the cast + shake

This is the step that makes people think I did something dramatic… but it’s literally just timing.

I wait until my hair is 100% dry. Not 90%. Not “it feels dry-ish.” Fully dry. Then I:

1) Break the cast
I scrunch gently to soften the gel/mousse cast. If I do this too early, I get frizz and lose definition.

2) Shake at the roots
I put my fingers at the scalp and do a gentle shake to lift. This is where the volume shows up. If you’re scared of frizz, do it only at the roots first.

3) Separate curls only if needed
If I separate too much, I lose definition. I only pick apart curls that look overly stuck together.

Step 10: Common mistakes that steal curly volume (I’ve done all of these)

Using heavy creams as the main styler when hair is fine or easily weighed down.

Applying product too close to the scalp and then wondering why roots are flat.

Not enough hold (curls look good for 30 minutes, then collapse).

Over-scrunching if you’re trying to keep length.

Breaking the cast too early and creating frizz before the curl is set.

Air-drying in one position (hair dries plastered to the scalp). If I air-dry, I flip sides every so often or clip roots for lift.

My “highly requested” routine layout (easy to screenshot)

In the shower: detangle, rinse well, keep hair very wet.

Styling on soaking wet hair:
Apply a lightweight hold product for definition, then add mousse for volume. Focus product on mid-lengths and ends; keep roots light.

Set roots:
Clip at the crown (and side part area if needed) for root lift.

Dry:
Hover diffuse to set, then diffuse roots for volume. Or air-dry with clips, then finish with a short diffuse.

Finish (only when fully dry):
Scrunch out the cast, shake roots, lightly separate if needed.

Little confidence note because I needed it too

Some days my curls look like a perfect routine tutorial. Some days they look like I fought a humidifier and lost. Either way, I’m choosing big hair energy 😌 If your curls fall flat, it’s not a personal failure—most of the time it’s just product weight + hold + drying technique. Once you tweak those, the volume starts showing up fast.

If you’re trying this for the first time, give it a few wash days. Curly hair is weirdly sensitive to small changes, and once you find your sweet spot, the “flat roots” era ends.
